Arvind:
Money is a means in social enterprise, not the ends like in traditional enterprise. Things like 'triple bottom line' sound like co-primary objectives to me, and I'm suspicious of organizations that even come close to placing profit first while claiming to have societal benefit in mind.

While social enterprise must definitely be creative, but it need not be artistic and often is not. Since a social entrepreneur is fundamentally re-writing a portion of the social contract, they must also by definition operate within the domain of culture, where the word is interpreted in the broadest possible sense i.e. a set of norms built around various beliefs. In most cases, the beliefs that are challenged are implicit beliefs (who should have clean water, or health care, or education, etc) rather than explicit beliefs (my God is better than your God). However, I would agree that say, Buddha, was a social entrepreneur as were most religious/spiritual figures. Many mass leaders like Gandhi were social entrepreneurs as well.

excellent piece. one thought that it triggered is that since the primary objective of social enterprise is not money or profit, it is far more likely to be creative/artistic and in the domain of culture. what say you?

Hi Rahul,

What a beautiful thing to share with your cousins...it's nice to see that although they were resistant at first, they eventually opened up. And I love the older uncle that just "gets it". "=) I had similar experiences...it's something about our generation that's more skeptical and "exchange oriented" (esp. in India). For the elders, kindness is sort of just built-in, neighbors had to rely on neighbors in their times...the interdependence is more recognized/accepted.

Anyways, hope you're well. Hugs to you and Asha :-)
